According to BuzzFeed, Krakow Christmas Market is one that you have to visit before you die! Krakow was placed on 9th out of 39 markets in Europe, that will put you in a festive mood. Although Germany rules when it comes to a Christmas markets, the one in Krakow is one of the most charming events in Europe in December.
It starts at the end of November and lasts through December. It’s strong attitude is the location – at the Main Market Square, the heart of the Old Town in Krakow. All of this is accompanied by Christmas carols in the background and sparkling streets with light-colored ornaments, that looks even more amasing when covered with snow (still waiting for it this year!). The tradition of fairs held before Christmas in the Market Square dates back to the early 14th century. At the fairs traders came from countries around the world, to present and sell their goods, as well as learn about local traditions and rituals.
Merchants offer a wide range of Christmas products and decorations, folk art, jewellery, souvenirs, postcards and calendars. Prices are competitive. You can also enjoy the local specialities, such as grilled oscypek with cranberry, and if you are cold you may warm up yourself with a cup of mulled wine.
On the first Thursday in December there is the nativity scenes (called szopki) contest of Krakow – in the morning, artists present their works at the foot of the monument of Adam Mickiewicz at the Main Square, and then at noon form a parade to transfer their works to the Krzysztofory Palace. 3 days later, on Sunday, the jury announces the results of the competition and opens the annual exhibition of nativity scenes (the world’s largest collection).
