Palm Sunday in Lipnica Murowana. Here a traditional palm festival takes place every year– people bring home made, 25 meterslong (!), colourful palms to a church for a holy blessing. Then there is a competition for the most beautiful and the highest Easter palm. This unique tradition attracts many tourists, you may also buy an unusual souvenir from Poland: miniature home made Easter palm.
Good Friday in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. During the day of fasting (no meat to be eaten) Catholics celebrate the Way of the Cross and in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska an extraordinary open-air spectacle takes place in the hills surrounding the Shrine. Mannerist Complex of Architecture, landscape and pilgrimage park (Cross Way with its 42 churches and chapels, called Polish Via Dolorosa) are listed by UNESCO.
In the evening: a lesson of how to make a perfect Easter egg. Polish pisanka is a richly decorated egg, traditionally made before Easter. It symbolise the revival of nature. In different parts of Poland there are various types of colourful pisanki, based on the technique and preparation used.
Holy Saturday in Krakow and Wieliczka. A traditional blessing of the Easter food-baskets outside St. Mary’s Church on Market Square, followed by visit to the Grave of Jesus displays in the church.
In the evening: a concert in St. Kinga’s Chapel in Wieliczka Salt Mine. This is part of Misteria Paschalia festival, one of Europe’s most important events focusing on Renaissance and Baroque music linked to the Holy Week and Easter, performed by masters and outstanding interpreters of early music.
Easter Sunday in Krakow. In the morning a traditional Easter breakfast, which contains the foods blessed on Easter Saturday as well as other traditional Easter foods.
Later a visit to Camaldolese Hermitage Church, from 1603, beautifully situated in forest on Silver Mount in Bielany. Camaldolese monks are hermits living in small hermitic bungalows according to strict rules based on the rule of St. Benedict. Easter Sunday is one of the very few days during the year when women are allowed to visit the church.
In the afternoon a dinner in the beautiful interiors of Wierzynek restaurant. Wierzynek dates back to the medieval times. It is famous for the outstanding celebration in 1364, the wedding of King’s Casimir III the Great granddaughter Princess Elizabeth of Pomerania with an Emperor Charles IV. The celebration was attended by numerous European monarchs and guests. Many politics and celebrities was also hosted in this restaurant including Charles de Gaulle, George Bush Sr., Fidel Castro, Sophie Marceau, Steven Spielberg, Clive Cussler, Robert De Niro and Kate Moss.
Easter Monday in Krakow and Zakopane. Visit to Salwator district, where a famous colourful church fair called Emaus takes place. Easter Monday is also a traditional water-splashing day, so be careful! :)
Later depart for Zakopane to attend an annual skiing contest, that take place at Kalatowki glade (1200 meters above sea level). Participants start in traditional Highland clothes and ski on old wooden skis! Lots of fun and beautiful views of the Tatra mountains are guaranteed. Moreover in spring the glade is covered with crocuses.
